Tea was used to cure persistent headaches and to cure throat irritations. Folklore: Betony was added to food to mend the hearts of quarreling couples, also added to midsummer bonfires to purify the body of ills and evil and has also cured the mysterious disease of elf-sickness. Also makes a good substitute for black tea. Try blending it with other flavorful tea herbs.

DESCRIPTION: Grow your own sugar, with minimum calories. Ten to fifteen times sweeter than table sugar. Stevia's natural habitat is growing primarily in infertile acidic sands and mucks but is very adaptable to a variety of soil conditions. Stevia prefers full sun to part shade. I suggest you take it in and treat as a houseplant over winter up north. FDA is testing for approval as a food additive. This is one of the few non hardy plants I grow. Well worth my trouble. A typical look of stevia is a spindly plant.

DESCRIPTION: Comfrey herbs contain the active ingredient allantoin, a skin healer proven to heal wounds and skin ulcers. Allantoin adheres to the skin to stimulate the growth of healthy tissue. Beware: it heals the wound so fast that many times the infection is still in the cut. Softening and soothing, it is used in creams, lotions and bath brews. Use it to treat burns, bed sores, insect bites, athlete’s foot, psoriasis, eczema, and sprains. Fresh leaves can be mashed in a blender and applied to the skin. In folk lore it was carried for protection during travel and is used in money spells. Comfrey produces a brown dye with a mordant iron.

DESCRIPTION: Has lovely white button flowers that are useful in dried or fresh flower arrangements. Historically used to relieve pain from migraine headaches, painful periods and rheumatism. Used in folk lore, it was carried to protect against colds and flu's. Do not use feverfew during pregnancy because of its stimulant action on the uterus. Yields a yellow dye in wool with the mordant chrome.

Tansy is also used in cleansing lotion for treating acne; it has a soothing effect. In folklore, tansy got its name from Anastasia, the Greek word for "immortality,” and was often put in coffins as an insect repellent. Dye plant producing yellows and greens.

DESCRIPTION: Masses of strongly fragrant scented white to pink flowers, used at one time for sedative tinctures and called the "poor man's valium.” The valerian holds a prominent position as one of the best herbal tranquilizers and muscle relaxants the plant kingdom has to offer. Caution: valerian may cause headaches, muscular spasms, and palpitations. It is not recommended for long-term use. Tincture of valerian helps clear dandruff. Folklore: Used in protective sachets or place under the pillow to help you sleep. Powdered valerian roots are considered a substitute for graveyard dust.

DESCRIPTION: Vervain had many uses in Native American culture as food and medicine. The flowers are small but numerous, lavender in color, arranged on long spikes. The name Verbena was the classical Roman name for 'altar-plants' in general, it was used in various rites and incantations, and employed by magicians and sorcerers. Vervain was considered a cure-all and sacred plant, helping to save those of the medieval plagues.

DESCRIPTION: Vervain has a long history of being a healing and sacred herb. Legend has it that vervain was used to stanch the bleeding of Christ’s wounds. During the Middle Ages it was an ingredient of witch potions and undiluted juice was smeared on the body to guard against future health problems. It is also a common ingredient in love mixtures and protective and prosperity spells. Throughout summer, vervain sports tiny lpink flowers on tall spikes.
