DESCRIPTION: Horsetails are among the oldest of all plants;
they once grew to tree heights in prehistoric days. It has unusual
reed-like hollow jointed stems with a very high silica content,
making it useful as an abrasive similar to that of a fine emery
cloth. Collect the leafless stems, dry briefly in the sun and
tie them in bundles. Used to shine metal pans or give wood a
final sanding. Also used as excellent fungicide for both plants
and people suffering from athletics' foot and jock itch. Leaves
are very unique, similar to twigs and are a unique touch in
dried flower arrangements. Likes to be planted in boggy wet
places, but will do well in any type of soil.

(except wine) due to compounds closely related to blood thinners.

Sweetgrass

DESCRIPTION: Sweetgrass is used in prayer, smudging, purifying
ceremonies and is regarded as a sacred plant by the Native Americans.
It is not well known that it was also sacred to early Europeans
and is still used in churches on festival days. Sweet-grass
aroma is strong only when moistened or burned. As the grass
dries the fragrance intensifies. When burned it does not produce
an open flame but smolders. Just as the sweet scent is attractive
to people, it is also attractive to good spirits. Native Americans
often burned the grass at the beginning of a prayer or to attract
positive energies. A tea is brewed by Native Americans for coughs,
sore throats, chafing and venereal infections. It is warned
that because the roots contain coumarin that it may be considered
carcinogenic. *

DESCRIPTION: Historically the astringent and antibacterial leaves
were used medicinally and are still used externally by herbalists
to treat burns. St. Johns Wort is gaining popularity as Nature's
Prozac. For centuries, northern European women wore hyperium
to repel demon lovers. With the spread of Christianity the plant
was associated with John the Baptist; it was said that it flowers
on his birthday and bleeds red oil in August on the day he was
beheaded. Yellow and red dyes are obtained depending on the
mordant used.

DESCRIPTION: Evergreen with deep blue flower spikes in summer;
it can be trimmed into a hedge. Used since biblical times for
cleansing, it has mild germ killing properties. A poultice of
hyssop is said to help heal wounds and bruises. Medieval monastery
gardens all contained hyssop, which was believed to ward off
the evil eye. It was also used as a purification herb. An infusion
of hyssop was sprinkled around the home or over a person to
rid them of negativity. Hyssop is soothing in a bath and in
herbal facials; it can also be added to potpourris. Teas have
been used historically to treat fever, colds, indigestion and
asthma.

glory and reward. A must in every good cook’s kitchen, you’re
truly missing out if you’ve never had fresh bay leaves. It is
important to remove the leaf from your soups, stew, casseroles
and sauces before serving; it can get caught in the throat.
I was told by an Italian Grandmother that if your stomach is
not feeling quite right, brew a cup of tea with a bay leaf and
sip slowly. In the North, plant out in the landscape and bring
indoors in October to over-winter as a houseplant. Add a leaf
to your stored grains to repel weevils.

substitute in pickling, salad dressings, stir fries, stews and
roasts. The Greeks and Romans chewed lovage seeds to aid digestion
and legend tells of seeds put into potion to conjure up love

and a lovage herb bath is said to make you more beautiful.

DESCRIPTION: Named after the Egyptian god Horus, an incense
was made and burned in rituals to honor him. Used in sachets
to protect against sorcery and to break magic spells. Medicinally
used as a cough and sore throat medicine and as a base for candies.
Externally used to help speed the healing of wounds. Large doses
of this herb can result in a laxative effect and an irregular
heartbeat.

herb tea, soothing in the bath, penetrating as a facial and
brightens blond hair. Harvest flowers by spreading fingers and
gently pulling up being careful not to pull plants out of the

to a true green. Leaves impart a lemon flavor to soups, salads,
fish, fruit dishes, poultry and makes an excellent tea having
a mild sedative effect and was used as a mild form of Valium
in the mid-seventeenth century. Lemon Balm seems to inhibit
bacteria and virus’ growth. Fresh leaves were once used to polish
wood furniture by grabbing a bunch of leaves and rubbing into
the wood. Beekeepers would rub the inside of their hive to entice
a new swarm of bees to stay. Although the flowers attract honeybees,
they repel certain insects. Have a few bunches around the next
time you are having a picnic.
